Basic Interview Advice

Anger image courtesy of Michal Zacharzewski, RGBStock.comAfter an interesting conversation with a local (Hampshire) employer recently, I thought a few basics on interviewing might be worth mentioning:

  • Watch your tongue when you are interviewing. In an effort to display knowledge of the industry, many applicants tend to talk too much – sometimes to the point of repeating gossip. This is not a good idea. Even worse is to talk against a current or previous employer or disclose sensitive information. Be aware that interviewers may well network with and even provide feedback to the companies discussed during interviews. Be careful about making a good impression and make sure you avoid possible serious repercussions if you don’t honour any confidentiality clauses in present or past contracts.
  • Mind your manners and remain polite throughout the interview and for the duration of the application process. Should you be rejected, thank the company for their time and move on. Any display of anger or rude behavior is bound to come back to haunt you.
  • Interviewers are people and treating people (interviewers, previous employers, previous and possible future colleagues) with respect should be a basic minimum for interviews.
